The team known as the New York Nets were originally called the New Jersey Americans in their first season in the American Basketball Association (ABA) which was established in 1967. They moved from New Jersey to Long Island in 1968 and changed their name to the New York Jets.
They returned to New Jersey in 1977 and became the New Jersey Nets. In 2012 they moved to Brooklyn to become the Brooklyn Nets.
